What is a Doula?
A doula provides service for a woman before, during, and after her pregnancy. Basically, a doula is your best friend, maid, and clean-up crew during the different steps. A doula provides companionship, emotional support, physical support, and information to a woman. This support takes place throughout her journey of pregnancy and birthing her baby including labor and delivery along with supporting the partner/spouse and her children.
Doulas are a constant resource. Information is given to ensure informed consent is a priority during any emergencies and non-emergencies. The acronym B.R.A.I.N is used to help deal with hard choices (using our brain is not as easy in high intense situations).
When using the acronym B.R.A.I.N, these questions are asked:
Benefits- What are the benefits?
Risk- What are the risk?
Alternatives- What are the alternatives?
Intuition- What is your intuition telling you?
No- Doing nothing is just fine sometimes!
Midwife/ OB-GYN (Health Care Provider) vs. Doula
A health care provider does all the medical work to and for the mother and her baby while a doula does not provide any medical work and is only a support mother.
